Comfort = Style
Comfort is everything when you're exercising. What you wear will genuinely impacts how you feel and perform, so choosing the right outfit isn’t just about style—it’s about function.
My go-to is a pair of tight bike shorts and a padded sports bra. The bike shorts and sports bra gives your body some support. I remember when I first started running, I didn’t have bike shorts and feeling my bum jiggle was awful. Still jiggles but a little less. And as much as I support the 'Free the Nipple' Campaign, it's not for me to participate in actively.
If I’m at the gym, I bring my towel and water bottle, and gloves—though honestly, I still get calluses, so I'm not convinced they make much of a difference, maybe my calluses aren’t as bad as without by a smidge. I also must be wearing supportive socks and a good pair of shoes! My hair – my god, do not touch me!! It must be in a bun, not moving, not touching anything!
I’ve noticed that a lot of people prefer wearing oversized T-shirts or layering with a singlet. Personally I would feel far too hot if I cover my midriff area and I can’t have things moving around me. As long as you're able to move freely and you're not irritated by what your wearing, that’s what truly matters.
I met a beautiful woman at the gym who had been feeling insecure. She was wearing an all-black outfit and oversized tee to try to cover what she was unhappy about. If you think something and you act on it, you're only further cementing the negative thought that you had - don't go there. Just steam roll ahead and wear what you want to wear!
My Outdoor Workout Essentials
When I exercise outside, I wear pretty much the same base outfit—tight bike shorts and padded sports bra—but I add a few key items for sun protection and practicality.
If you're going to be out in the sun, sunscreen is a must. I also wear my Rhode Athletic Visor—it keeps the sun off my face and stops the glare. I use an armband phone holder with a secure velcro strap that keeps everything in place, and I always bring my running sunglasses. These are specifically designed to stay and not slide down your face, a running essential.
Even if you're just heading out for a walk, wearing the right outfit can make a big difference. I’ve made the mistake of wearing a cute "lunching" outfit on a walk and ended up hot, sweaty, and frustrated. Lesson learned: choose function over fashion—unless you can find both!
Running & Walking in the Rain
Don’t let a little drizzle ruin your workout. If it’s not too cold, exercising in light rain can actually feel refreshing. To stay comfortable, I recommend wearing your Rhode Athletic Cap or Visor along with your sunglasses. Once your sunnies get wet, visibility becomes an issue—so that extra layer of protection from your Rhode Athletic Visor really helps. Chuck a towel in the car for afterwards.
And remember: it’s not about looking perfect while you move—it’s about feeling empowered, supported, and ready to show up for yourself to get it done.
